November 21, 2024

If you’re an apartment or condo building owner, property manager, and/or on the strata/condo board, now is the time to take advantage of EV ready plan rebates that enhance your property and strengthen your investment with electric vehicle charging. Our comprehensive EV Ready Plan Guide is here to help you navigate these opportunities and maximize your savings.

Multiple provinces and municipalities across Canada have introduced programs designed to promote EV readiness in multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) through EV Ready Plans—detailed roadmaps that assess a building’s electrical capacity, determine the best layout for charging stations, and outline the steps needed to prepare the property for the installation of EV chargers, ensuring long-term compatibility and efficiency.

These programs, and similar proposals currently under consideration, represent a major shift in urban planning and sustainable living strategies for hundreds of communities.

Using EV rebates and regulations as carrots and sticks, they offer powerful incentives for MURBs prepare for the widespread adoption of EVs on the near horizon.

Where are EV Ready Plans Eligible for Rebates?

British Columbia

The Province of British Columbia offers rebates for MURBs to support the planning and electrical upgrades needed to provide one or more electrified parking space per residential unit. An EV Ready Plan is required to claim separate rebates for the purchase and installation of EV chargers.

Quebec

The Quebec Strategy for Charging Electric Vehicles 2023-2030 aims to support the addition of 600,000 new charging spaces in MURBs by 2030, an increase of 35%. Eligible expenses for financial support now include the planning and design of EV charging solutions, in addition to the cost of installing chargers and upgrading electrical infrastructure.

Nova Scotia

Efficiency Nova Scotia’s EV Ready Plan rebate supports the development of a long–term EV charging strategy, with a separate rebate available for installing chargers according to the plan.

Calgary, Alberta

In 2025, Calgary’s ChargeYYC pilot program will move into its second phase, providing funding for the installation of EV chargers based on approved “EV Charging Road Maps.”

Your planning document will be based on an in-depth site assessment, local by-laws and rebate program mandates, and your anticipated charging needs. We apply our extensive expertise to every last detail to create a customized plan that’s perfectly tailored to your property.

Electrical Planning Report (EPR): A critical early step in our planning process is assessing your building’s current power capacity, your overall power demands, peak usage periods, and spare capacity. We use these findings and estimates of future demands from chargers and other equipment (if you plan to install heat pumps, for example) to determine whether electrical infrastructure upgrades may be needed.

Hypercharge Pro Tip: EPRs will be required for all strata corporations in British Columbia by the end of 2026 or 2028, depending on the region. All Hypercharge EV Ready Plans in BC include an EPR, knocking down planning costs for stratas.

Driver needs: To estimate your current and future charging demands, we analyze the driving behaviours of your community. For example, we’ll consider average distances driven, vehicle types and sizes, resident demographics (does your building house more commuters or retired residents?), and responses to tenant surveys, where applicable.

Technical requirements: Your EV Ready Plan will lay out the specific technical requirements of your rebate program that inform our recommendations for electrical upgrades. An electrical circuit, for example, may have a maximum demand that can be placed upon it based on the rating of its breaker. We examine the fine print and plan the necessary infrastructure in minute detail to guarantee your charging operation will tick every box.

Hypercharge Pro Tip: Combine an EV Ready Plan with our Managed Networking service for bulletproof internet connectivity, next-level service and support, and cloud-based monitoring.

EV Charging Proposal: In addition to a thorough breakdown of necessary electrical upgrades, we’ll recommend charging stations that best suit your needs, network equipment for the internet connectivity required to use and manage your chargers, and optimal placement of your hardware. Your proposal will also include a complete cost breakdown for equipment, installations, EV charging software, and services.
