If you live in a condo, apartment, townhouse, or rowhouse in Calgary, Alberta, access to EV charging in multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) has just become a lot easier, thanks to the city’s new pilot program, ChargeYYC, a Calgary EV ready initiative.
What Is ChargeYYC?
ChargeYYC is a funding program aimed at breaking down barriers to EV adoption by helping MURBs develop customized EV Charging Road Maps (in Phase 1) and install EV charging stations (in Phase 2).
Available now, Phase 1 of the program offers grants of up to $4,000 or 50% of the total cost (whichever is lower) to assist with the professional costs of creating this plan.
Grant Details:
• Funding Availability: Up to 60 approved applicants in Phase 1
• Grant Amount: Up to $4,000 or 50% of the total cost (whichever is lower)
• Application Deadline: Open now until funding is allocated
• Who Can Apply: Condo board members, owners, property managers, or residents with explicit permission.
• Qualified Professionals: Plans must be developed by a licensed engineer or master electrician in Alberta
Why Is This Important?
An EV Charging Road Map is essentially a technical blueprint for installing EV charging infrastructure in your building.
It assesses your building’s electrical capacity, identifies optimal locations for chargers, and outlines the steps needed for installation.
This plan is crucial for streamlining the installation process and can significantly reduce future costs and complications.
This initiative is similar to EV Ready Plans in British Columbia, designed to make your building EV-ready efficiently and effectively.
How Does ChargeYYC Work?
1. Get Explicit Approval
Obtain explicit permission from property owner(s) or condo corporation.
2. Apply for the ChargeYYC Grant
Submit your application to the ChargeYYC program.
3. Contact Hypercharge
Once approved, reach out to Hypercharge, and we’ll take care of everything.
What’s Included in an EV Charging Road Map?
- Electrical Assessment: Evaluation of your building’s existing electrical infrastructure.
‎ - Charger Recommendations: Options for Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, including 120V or 240V outlets.
‎ - Energy Management Systems: Consideration of Electric Vehicle Energy Management Systems (EVEMS) for optimal efficiency.
‎ - Installation Plan: Detailed steps for installation, including potential challenges and solutions.
‎ - Cost Estimates: Transparent budgeting to help you plan financially.
Calgary’s Commitment to a Greener Future
Motor vehicles contribute 33% of Calgary’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. By promoting EV adoption, the city aims to reduce these emissions significantly.
The ChargeYYC program aligns with Calgary’s 2023-2026 Climate Implementation Plan, which includes:
- By 2026:Â All new residential buildings should be EV-ready.
- Commercial Buildings: Aiming for 10% EV-ready with 90% conduit system partial readiness.
With 38% of Calgary’s housing being multi-residential units (based on 2021 census data), programs like ChargeYYC are essential for enabling a large portion of the population to access EV charging.
Phase 2 Coming in 2025
Phase 2 of ChargeYYC is planned to launch in 2025. It will provide funding to help cover the actual installation costs of EV chargers for selected projects based on approved EV Charging Road Maps from Phase 1.
