Alberta is making it easier for businesses, municipalities, and condominium corporations to invest in EV charging infrastructure with the launch of a new funding program.
Administered by Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis), the Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP) opened for applications on February 5, 2025, offering $1.7 million in funding to help offset the cost of purchasing and installing EV chargers.
This initiative, funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP), supports the continued adoption of electric vehicles across the province by making charging more accessible for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
What’s New?
The EVCP provides eligible applicants with a rebate covering up to 46% of total project costs for EV charger installations.
Applicants can receive a maximum of $100,000 per project location and up to $300,000 total across multiple sites.Â
When budgeting for your project, keep in mind that Level 2 funding is calculated per port, while DC fast charging funding applies per charging station.
This means that for Level 2 stations with multiple connectors, like the Autel MaxiCharger AC Ultra, you could be eligible for double the funding—helping you maximize your rebate potential.
Funding Breakdown for EV Chargers:
• Level 2 Chargers (Up to 19.2 kW):
Up to 46% of total costs, max $5,000 per port
• DC Fast Chargers (20 kW to 49 kW):
Up to 46% of total costs, max $15,000 per charger
• DC Fast Chargers (50 kW to 99 kW):
Up to 46% of total costs, max $50,000 per charger
• DC Fast Chargers (100 kW to 199 kW):
Up to 46% of total costs, max $75,000 per charger
Who Can Apply?
The program is open to organizations looking to install new EV charging infrastructure or expand existing installations. Eligible applicants include:
- Municipalities (cities, towns, villages, and municipal districts in Alberta)
- Businesses (including commercial properties and retail locations)
- Condominium corporations and multi-unit residential buildings
- Industry associations and cooperatives
- Schools, institutions, and non-profits
- Indigenous communities
Individual residents and federal agencies are not eligible for funding.
How to Apply for EVCP Funding
Securing funding through the EVCP is a structured process designed to ensure projects align with program goals. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
Notify Alberta Municipalities of your intent to apply and your eligibility will be reviewed before proceeding to the next step.
2. Complete the EVCP Application
Submit project details, site plans, cost estimates, and proof of ownership or lease agreements. Applications must include technical details such as power output, charging plug type, and a cost breakdown.
3. Sign the Funding Agreement
Approved projects will receive a formal funding agreement. The project can begin once the agreement is signed by both parties. Applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, so early submissions are a must.Â
