NACS connectors are unlocking new possibilities for EV drivers across North America. Hypercharge has begun offering these connectors on our range of Level 2 and DC fast charging stations, expanding convenient charging access and helping drivers stay on the move.
When it comes to Level 2 charging stations, our NACS connectors works with every Tesla, so there’s no need to worry about compatibility for everyday charging at home or work.
With NACS on DC fast charging stations, however, Tesla drivers may find an upgrade is required to start charging. In this blog, we break down checking compatibility of Tesla drivers and next steps if a retrofit is required.
Why NACS Matters
The North American Charging Standard (NACS) began as Tesla’s proprietary connector for its vehicles and charging network. In November 2022, Tesla opened the design and specifications for use by other EV makers and charging networks, paving the way for broader industry collaboration.
By 2023, a growing number of automakers announced plans to include NACS ports in their upcoming models. With those vehicles beginning to hit the road in 2025, NACS connectors will begin growing on the number of charging stations across North America.
Checking Your Tesla’s Compatibility
For existing Tesla owners, vehicles manufactured before 2022 may lack the communication handshake required by NACS-equipped DC fast chargers. This means you could arrive at a charging station to find that the car won’t initiate a charge.
Before you’re in this situation, it’s worth confirming whether your Tesla is already set up for third-party NACS DC charging. In your vehicle’s settings, go to:
‎
- Software → Additional Vehicle Information
- Look for CCS and 3rd-party NACS DC charging, which will say either Enabled or Not Installed.

If your vehicle says Enabled, you’re ready to connect and start charging. If you’re vehicle says Not Installed, Tesla offers a hardware upgrade in the form of a retrofit.
This upgrade ensures your vehicle can communicate properly with third-party NACS DC fast chargers and comes with a Tesla CCS Combo 1 adapter included with the service visit.
Charging with NACS at a Hypercharge Station
Once your Tesla supports NACS DC fast charging, simply plug in the Hypercharge NACS connector and follow the charging instructions on the charger’s screen. There’s no additional adapter needed at stations that have a dedicated NACS plug.
