EV Charging Costs in 2026: Canada, US, UK, and Europe Compared

October 29, 2026
Hcblog Globalchargingprices

How much does it really cost to charge an electric vehicle around the world? Depending on where you plug in, the difference can be significant: from Canada and the United States to the United Kingdom and Europe, public EV charging prices vary considerably, with drivers in some markets paying nearly three times as much per kilowatt-hour as those in others.

But here’s where things get interesting. Despite enjoying some of the lowest public charging prices, North America continues to lag behind Europe in EV adoption. In fact, countries with some of the highest charging costs are seeing far greater numbers of drivers make the switch to electric.

So what’s behind this surprising contrast? We’ve compared the latest public EV charging prices across four major markets to uncover what drives these differences, how charging costs influence EV adoption, and what the numbers reveal about the road ahead.

How Public EV Charging Costs Compare Internationally

Beyond location, a number of factors contribute to public EV charging prices, such as electricity costs, charger speed, network operator, and payment method.

To create a meaningful comparison, we’ve focused on DC fast charging, which offers quick and convenient battery top-ups while on the road. Level 2 charging data can be less useful because charging fees are more likely to reflect workplace or residential building policies, parking arrangements, and other influences.

The figures below compare public charging prices per kilowatt-hour (kWh) using the latest available data for 2026. These numbers aren’t a perfect apples-to-apples comparison since some sources track quarterly national averages, while others monitor live operator tariffs or specific charger categories, but they offer a useful snapshot across major global markets.

How Much of the New-Car Market Is Electric in 2026?

If public charging costs were the primary driver of EV adoption, Canada and the U.S. should be miles ahead of the U.K. and Europe, but according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the opposite is true.

Behind the Numbers

If cheaper public charging doesn’t guarantee higher EV adoption, what else is driving EV adoption rates? A combination of regulations, financial incentives, driving habits, and infrastructure helps explain the differences.

Fuel Standards

In Europe, fleet-emissions standards encourage automakers to sell more low- and zero-emission vehicles.

Fuel Prices

Fuels taxes tend to be higher across much of Europe compared to North America, nudging drivers towards electric, even when public charging rates are relatively high.

Financial Incentives

Many European countries offer incentives such as purchase grants, reduced registration fees, lower annual vehicle taxes, or preferential treatment for company vehicles.

In the U.S., the expiration of federal EV purchase tax credits coincided with a decline in year-over-year sales during the fourth quarter of 2025.

The story was similar in Canada, with new-vehicle sales dropping from 17% to 11% after the federal iZEV rebate program ended.

Driving Habits and Vehicle Choices

In North America, drivers frequently travel longer distances than in Europe, often in larger vehicles.

Despite major increases in EV battery capacity over the past several years, concerns about driving range continue to influence buying decisions, especially outside major cities.

Public Charging Networks

The IEA reports that, at the end of 2025, European Union public charging networks supported about 11 light-duty vehicles per public charging point.

In the U.S., that number jumps to 33 vehicles per charging point.

The Real Opportunity for North America

Affordable EV charging prices combined with the sprawling road networks across Canada and the U.S. offer abundant opportunities to help keep drivers moving and support those who don’t have access to a private garage or driveway.

Hypercharge helps residential property owners, municipalities, businesses, and community organisations add charging infrastructure and generate new revenue through several flexible models.

OnCurb

Hypercharge’s OnCurb program makes public curbside EV charging available in neighbourhoods with overnight street parking, including residential permit zones.

Site hosts receive a share of charging fees, while Hypercharge handles installation, operations, maintenance, and upfront project costs.

Charging-as-a-Service

For sites with space for EV charging stations, Charging-as-a-Service makes it possible to offer EV charging and earn a share of charging fee revenue while outsourcing system design, installation, operations, and ongoing maintenance to Hypercharge.

Direct Ownership

For organizations with available resources for equipment, installation, and maintenance, direct ownership of EV chargers offers greater control over a charging site and its charging revenue.
